Clarke Award و پرفروشترین و بهترین کتاب سال از دیدگاه New York Times. ششمین رمان از نویسنده آمریکایی Colson Whitehead که توانسته نظر بسیاری از منتقدین را به خود جلب کند. شاهکاری بی بدیل راجع به بردگی که نظیر آن در کمتر کتابی مشاهده شده. رمانی پر از اندیشه آزادی، اسارت و تعقیب و گریز که تاریخ سیاه و شوم بردگی  در آمریکا را نشان می دهد.
زندگی نه تنها برای Cora بلکه برای تمامی بردگانی که در مزرعه کاشت پنبه در Georgia کار می کنند جهنم وار است. این وضعیت برای Cora دختر جوان آفریقایی وحشتناک تر نیز هست، زیرا او در بین هم وطنان خود  کاملا یک غریبه تلقی می شود. با نزدیک شدن به ایام بزرگسالی مشکلات او دو چندان شده و زندگی در این مکان برای او بیش از پیش سخت می شود اما ورود برده جدیدی از Virginia به اسم Caesar همه چیز را برای او تغییر می دهند. Caesar راجع به یک راه آهن زیر زمینی با Cora صحبت می کند و آن دو تصمیمی سخت و خطرناک برای فرار از آن جهنم می گیرند. اگر چه آنها موفق می شوند ایستگاهی پیدا کرده و به سمت شمال پیش بروند اما همه چیز طبق برنامه پیش نمی رود و حالا هر دو آنها تبدیل به صیدی مناسب برای سفید پوستان بی رحمی چون Ridgeway می شوند.

Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia.
